Fig Leaves
--- by Saundra Elaine
|
In 1978 Saundra Elaine Baker's love of fashion and talent for individualizing
her personal style (both inherited from her mother) culminated into
a vision of designing clothes professionally. Baker felt her vision
was divinely inspired and quickly set about researching various aspects
of the fashion industry. She made her professional debuts under the
label "Fig Leaves by Saundra Elaine" at a fall fashion show
in 1981. The name "Fig Leaves", Baker revealed, is part
of "the vision" and was given as a reminder that clothes
adorn our physical bodies but God is interested in our inner being
(spirit and soul). During the fashion show she was presented as the
newest member of an innovative corps of designers, known as "Riceys
Designers of Color", named for the founder Laurice Jones. Baker's
first collection was received with thunderous applause. With her passion
for combining exquisite textiles, unique accessories and brilliant,
colors. Baker's designs tend to be sophisticated, carrying with them
a quiet elegance.

The following spring, Laurice Jones, a Howard University fine arts
graduate turned fashion broker, housed her talented designers in her
new boutique. The designer's gallery was located in Georgetown, an
upscale fashion district in Washington, D.C. which Jones appropriately
named "Ricey's of Georgetown". The very first "Fig
Leaves by Saundra Elaine" shingle was hung and Baker remained
a featured designer, creating originals for both private and general
clientele until the shop closed in 1986. Since that time, "Fig
Leaves by Saundra Elaine" designs have been featured at boutiques
in Capitol Height, MD and Chicago, EL. Baker now is honored to be
among the select designers and artisans of 3L Manufactures For Designers
located in Atlanta, GA. |
